Who, What, and Why of Dermaplaning

The Skin Alcove launched with Bio-Active Skin Treatments which are 75 to 90 minute corrective facials. What's special about them is that they can include up to three modalities and all of them support skin barrier function instead of damaging the skin.

We then introduced the SWiCH treatment which is a chemical peel alternative for clients 35 years and older that acts on expression lines (wrinkles), glycation, and sun damage. The SWiCH filled a gap in our offerings for clients with aging concerns that wanted to step up in strength.

Post Dermaplaning

Today, I’m pleased to announce we'll be offering Dermaplaning. Dermaplaning (or Epidermal Leveling) is a physical exfoliation technique that superficially removes redundant skin cells using a surgical blade. It's often used in skincare clinics as an alternative to Microdermabrasion or as a prep for chemical peels.

Dermaplaning rose to prominence primarily for the facial hair removal aspect. This helps with more flawless makeup application and delivers a “glass skin” look to your complexion. While it does remove vellus hair, that is not the primary goal of Dermaplaning. I was hesitant to bring on Dermaplaning because of the misconception people have of what it's meant for.

Dermaplaning won't be introduced to The Skin Alcove as a separate facial but as a treatment modality that can be included into your Bio-Active Skin Treatment. Dermaplaning is not recommended for clients who are on blood thinners, prone to keloids, or are acne prone. There's a real, if rare, risk of nicks from the surgical blade. Blood thinners could make a minor inconvenience a serious issue. Similar case for keloids. If your skin responds to trauma and cuts by forming a thick, raised scar, Dermaplaning is also not safe for you.

I want to separately speak on how Dermaplaning is not for acne prone skin. The act of Dermaplaning is traumatic to the skin and can trigger an inflammatory response in the hair follicle. Acne prone skin already suffers from increased C. Acne bacteria and hyperproliferation of dead skin cells in the pore. Dermaplaning would be introducing the last factor necessary for a breakout and that is inflammation. This is why it's not a modality that could be included in the Clearing Bio-Active Skin Treatment.

While I want you to get excited about the new and highly in demand Dermaplaning option, I wanted to also give you some education as to why we would include it in your appointment or why we wouldn't, even if you requested it.

Dermaplaning is best for clients who have a dull skin appearance and would benefit from physical exfoliation to improve skin texture and luminosity.
